Starting from the 2026 A Levels, significant changes will be made to the A Level scoring system used to compute Junior College (JC) students' University Admission Score in Singapore. Here’s what you need to know and how to calculate your rank points under the new A Level scoring system.
Key Changes to the A Level Scoring System
Choice of Subjects: Students may choose to take either:
Four Higher 2 (H2) subjects, or
Three H2 subjects and one Higher 1 (H1) subject.
Fourth Content-Based Subject: The fourth content-based subject will only be included in the computation if it improves the student’s overall University Admission Score. This change offers more flexibility and ensures students’ scores reflect their strongest subjects.
Project Work: Project Work will no longer be factored into the rank point computation. Students will simply receive a pass or fail grade. A ‘Pass’ in Project Work remains a requirement for university applications.
Maximum Rank Points:
Under the current system, the maximum rank points achievable is 90.
From 2026, the maximum rank points will be 70.
A Level Rank Points Breakdown
The following table outlines the new rank point computation for each grade:
Grade | Score Range (%) | Rank Points (H2) | Rank Points (H1) |
A | 70% - 100% | 20 | 10 |
B | 60% - 69% | 17.5 | 8.75 |
C | 55% - 59% | 15 | 7.5 |
D | 50% - 54% | 12.5 | 6.25 |
E | 45% - 49% | 10 | 5 |
F | 40% - 44% | 5 | 2.5 |
U | Below 40% | 0 | 0 |
How the A level Rank Point Calculation Works
Students Taking Four H2 Subjects
If you take four H2 subjects, the H2 subject with the lowest grade will be converted to a H1 subject for the computation of rank points. This means the rank points for that subject will be halved. Here’s how this works:
Example:
A student takes 4 H2 subjects and achieves the following grades:
3 As in H2 subjects,
1 C in the weakest H2 subject, and
B in General Paper (GP).
Calculation: Rank Points = 3 H2 + 1 H1 (GP) + (Weakest H2) / 2
= (20 + 20 + 20) + 8.75 + (15 / 2)*
= 68.75 Rank Points
*Note: The weakest H2 subject is halved to align with the H1 grading scale. If this subject does not improve the overall score, it will not be included in the computation.
